DURATION
ZOOM (Blended Learning) – ±3 days online, including scheduled live sessions with a qualified facilitator.
eLearning – Fully online and self-paced. Learners can start, pause, and resume at any time.
Content includes instructional videos, practical activities, and assignment-based evidence.
When completed part-time, this course typically takes 7–10 days.
CERTIFICATE | SETA STATEMENT OF RESULTS
TrainYouCan continuously submits verification requests to the ETDP SETA.
Verification turnaround times depend on ETDP SETA availability and may range from
6 weeks to 4 months.

This unit standard is designed for individuals who provide basic counselling and support services
in educational, workplace, community, and developmental environments.
It focuses on ethical, structured, and supportive counselling practices within clearly defined boundaries.
The unit standard does not qualify learners as psychologists or therapists,
but equips them with practical counselling skills to support individuals facing
personal, social, emotional, or workplace-related challenges.
The qualifying learner is capable of:
- Establishing a professional counselling relationship;
- Applying appropriate counselling techniques;
- Facilitating problem-solving and decision-making;
- Maintaining ethical standards and confidentiality;
- Referring individuals to specialist services where required.
COURSE SUMMARY
In particular, people credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Identify and analyse individual needs through structured counselling conversations.
- Apply basic counselling methods to support individuals effectively.
- Communicate empathetically and professionally using active listening skills.
- Manage boundaries and ethics within a counselling relationship.
- Record and report counselling outcomes appropriately.
- Recognise limitations and make appropriate referrals.
Note: Any person offering counselling services in an accredited environment
may only do so with a valid SOR (Statement of Results) issued by the ETDP SETA.
This unit standard provides foundational counselling skills and does not replace
professional clinical qualifications.
ENROLMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Competence in communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
- Ability to engage sensitively and ethically with individuals.
Basically, you must be able to read and write in English!
METHODS OF LEARNING
This course is offered through:
- eLearning – Self-paced online learning with counselling scenarios,
instructional videos, reflective activities, and assignment-based evidence submission. - ZOOM (Blended Learning) – Facilitator-led online sessions focusing on
practical counselling techniques, ethics, and real-life case discussions.
How eLearning works: Learners progress independently through modules and submit
evidence via an online learning platform.
How ZOOM blended learning works: Learners attend scheduled online sessions and
complete structured assignments and reflections after each session.
